Lifestyles of Gamers

Have you ever wondered what type of people play video games? Gamers come in different shapes, sizes, and forms. Gamers are unique in their own way. They can be anywhere from a teen in their room to a highly successful business executive in the office. They can even be internet online users. Take a look at some of the type of gamers that support society in the infographic. The data in the infographic is composed of data from the article “Lifestyles of Online Gamers: A Psychographic Approach.” Viewers will be surprised by how gamers live.
Though the data may seem outdated, the fact is that the data only slightly changes every year. The lifestyles don’t change drastically and has continued to be around the same average. Even with other current infographics, the data almost duplicates the same results.
The data also helps industries and advertisers how to promote products. As stated by the article, “The use of online games as advertising promotional communications tools also has the benefit of making it possible to implement viral marketing…However…Little academic research to date has been conducted on who adult online gamers are and what their attitudes and motivations are”[1]. If advertisers find the right type of people, they will be able to promote across larger regions.

  1. I'm curious - how are gamers being defined for this infographic? I know that there are many female gamers, but unless we're including Bejeweled and Farmville (and maybe we should), I'm surprised to see a female majority. Obviously there's a huge female gamer demographic that is often underrepresented in marketing and game design, but what kind of games are the majority of the two genders playing?

    1. I too am curious about this data. I could justify the 55% female considering a large percentage of that is middle aged which may account for housewives or moms who play with their kids during free time but even then what is the demograph is this national or international? What are they considering games and how was the information gathered? Was it a voluntary response?

  2. I'm a bit concerned that the only source you used for this is nine years old. And, though I am a so-called "girl gamer" myself, I really doubt that there are more girl gamers out there than male. How can you say for sure that the numbers only change a little every year, when you haven't even looked at current data?

    1. To be fair, the author said "Even with other current infographics, the data almost duplicates the same results" implying that he has looked at current data. However, I agree, that placing a current graphic would be better, unless they were visually unappealing.

  3. This infographic surprises me as to how many gamers are within the 35-54 age range. I would expect more at the 15-34 range but I guess that all depends on the kind of game we're talking about.

  4. Though I was also scratching my head, thinking: "where ARE all these female gamers??". But I think the reason it seems so surprising is that girls do play games, maybe not Call of Duty, but maybe Angry Birds, or Triple Town; essentially: casual games. Maybe this data would have been better presented if it were divided into casual and "hardcore" gamers. I think if that were the case, we'd see a higher percentage of female gamers playing casual games, and a higher percentage of males playing hardcore games.
